Marlin Masters OG Review
Marlin Masters OG is a fishing slot from Hacksaw Gaming where the fish are the payouts. Marlin symbols land carrying cash values, a Fisherman turns up and nets every one of them on the screen, and a multiplier is applied to the haul. If that sounds familiar, it should.
Pragmatic Play’s Big Bass Bonanza laid this template down in December 2020: cash-value fish, a collector that ignores paylines, and free spins where every fourth collector bumps the multiplier. Nearly six years and a great many imitations later, Marlin Masters OG is a cartoon version of the same idea, right down to a progress bar that counts Fishermen in fours.
It is not even this studio’s first attempt at it. Marlin Masters arrived in February 2025, and this is that game rebuilt 16 months later with a row and five paylines taken out. The grid went from 5×4 down to 5×3, the paylines from 14 to 9, and the volatility from Medium-High to Medium. The max win did not move, still 7,500x. Nothing new went in. This is a re-skin of a slot that was already working from someone else’s blueprint.
Pros
- Marlin symbols carry values up to 1,000x the bet each, so one well-timed collection can settle a session on its own.
- Up to five Fishermen can land at once and each one collects the entire grid separately, which is the real engine behind a big round rather than any single x20 multiplier.
- The Progress Bar pays out in spins as well as multipliers, with each of the three upgrades adding 8 free spins and lifting the Fisherman floor to x2, then x4, then x10.
- Every booster and buy returns slightly more than the base game, from 96.27% up to 96.33% against 96.25%, so using the menu is not the usual RTP penalty.
- Medium volatility and a 96.25% top RTP make it a sensible pick for working through sweeps coin wagering.
Cons
- his is the original Marlin Masters with a row and five paylines removed, and that game was already a cartoon take on Big Bass Bonanza. There is no new idea anywhere in it.
- Line pays are close to worthless. Five matching royals return 1x the bet, the best fish only 10x, and the drop from 14 paylines to 9 gives you fewer shots at even those.
- A 29.2% hit frequency is modest for a medium volatility slot, so dead stretches between collections are common.
- The x10 Fisherman floor only arrives once twelve Fishermen have landed, which is a long way into a round that starts with 10 or 15 spins.
- Labeling it OG when it followed the original by 16 months will confuse anyone searching for the earlier game.
Marlin Masters OG is a medium-volatility payline slot with a 7,500x max win, a 96.25% RTP in its top version, and a 29.2% hit frequency across five reels, three rows, and nine fixed paylines. Bets run from $0.10 to $100. Marlin symbols land carrying cash values from 0.5x up to 1,000x the bet, and there are two ways to collect them. Three or more Marlins in a winning payline combination form a Lootline, paying the sum of the values on those symbols: land 2x, 15x, and 40x on a line, and 57x is paid.
A Fisherman ignores paylines and collects every Marlin on the grid, applying its own multiplier of x1, x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, x15, or x20 to the total. One Fisherman can land per reel, and each one collects the whole grid separately, so a screen holding several Fishermen alongside several high Marlins is where the big rounds actually come from. Three, four, or five scatters trigger one of three free-spin rounds.
How To Play
- Set your stake from $0.10 to $100 using the bet controls.
- All 9 paylines are fixed, so there is nothing to adjust.
- Read the number printed on each Marlin. Three or more on a payline pay their combined value, not a fixed symbol prize.
- A Fisherman collects every Marlin on the grid, wherever they sit. More Fishermen on screen means more separate collections.
- Land 3, 4, or 5 FS symbols to trigger one of the three bonus rounds.
- Open the Bonus Buy menu to activate a booster or buy a free spins round outright.
- Note that hitting the 7,500x cap ends the round immediately and any free spins still owed are discarded.
Bonus Symbols
- Marlin: the cash symbol. Values run 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x, 500x, and 1,000x the bet. It pays when it forms part of a Lootline or when a Fisherman collects it.
- Fisherman: the collector. Sweeps every Marlin on the grid and pays the combined total, carrying a multiplier of x1, x2, x3, x4, x5, x10, x15, or x20 that is applied to that total. One can land per reel, so up to five can appear at once, and each collects the full grid separately. Fishermen do not collect other Fishermen.
- Wild: substitutes for every symbol in the paytable and pays 10x the bet for five of a kind, matching the best fish.
- FS Symbol: the scatter. Three, four, or five trigger Reel It In!, Off The Hook!, or Plenty of Fish in the Sea.
Bonus Features
- Lootlines: 3 or more Marlin symbols landing in a winning payline combination pay the sum of their displayed values instead of a fixed symbol payout.
- Reel It In!: 3 scatters award 10 free spins with the Marlin Progress Bar running.
- Off The Hook!: 4 scatters award 15 free spins with better chances of upgrading the Marlin Progress Bar as you go.
- Plenty of Fish in the Sea: 5 scatters award 10 free spins where every Marlin is worth at least 5x, and at least one Marlin plus one Fisherman are guaranteed on every spin. This is the hidden bonus and it is not available to buy.
- Marlin Progress Bar: the bar moves one step every time a Fisherman lands, whether or not it collects anything. Every fourth Fisherman unlocks an upgrade. Upgrade 1 awards 8 extra free spins and puts a floor of x2 on every Fisherman after it, Upgrade 2 awards another 8 spins and lifts the floor to x4, and Upgrade 3 awards 8 more and lifts it to x10.
Boosters
- BonusHunt FeatureSpins: 3x the bet, making each spin 5 times more likely to trigger a bonus game. RTP rises to 96.27%.
- Fishy FeatureSpins: 50x the bet for a higher chance of Fisherman and Marlin symbols landing, at a 96.33% RTP. Read the small print before you touch this one: FS symbols cannot land at all in this mode, so you are paying 50x a spin for base game collections with the bonus rounds switched off. Reel It In! costs the same 50x and actually gives you the feature.
Feature Buys
- Reel It In!: 50x the bet, at a 96.29% RTP.
- Off The Hook!: 200x the bet, at a 96.32% RTP.
- Plenty of Fish in the Sea is not purchasable at any price. Five scatters is the only way in.
SweepsPlays Verdict
- Best thing: the Fisherman collection. A x20 multiplier on a grid full of Marlins is a clean route to 7,500x, and the Progress Bar makes the back half of a bonus round stronger than the front.
- Worst thing: nothing here has not been played already. This is Big Bass Bonanza’s template in a cartoon coat, and the cut from 14 paylines to 9 means even Hacksaw’s own earlier version does it better.
- Final call: skip it. Big Bass Bonanza is the blueprint, Marlin Masters is the stronger Hacksaw take, and both have more paylines than this. Only players new to fisherman collectors are served here, and even they should start with one of those two.
