Big Bass Splash Review
Do you enjoy the simple things in life, like jumping in your truck and heading down to the shore for a day of fishing? How about bringing a bazooka along for the ride?! Well, this is the backdrop for Big Bass Splash, a game that belongs to one of the most popular slots series of all time, and some might say surprisingly so.
In the base game, things might seem…well, basic. We have no clusters or tumbles, just good old fashioned paylines – 10 of them, in fact. You can land things like rods, trucks and Fish Money symbols, and the latter have values attached, but those values won’t come into play just yet… In fact, there’s not a great deal going on here, to be honest. You’re essentially hoping to create some paylines on the 5 x 3 grid, and land 3+ Scatter symbols to take you to the free spins round.
The bonus round is where things start to heat up, but before it begins, there’s the potential to land up to 5 modifiers. These will increase the likelihood of certain symbols hitting, for example, or give you more free spins.
Then once the free spins begin proper, the Fisherman from the title screen starts to make a few appearances. He acts as a standard Wild to complete paylines, as well as gathering up any Fish Money symbols on-screen, which you then receive as wins. Also, for every appearance he’ll light up one square on the progressive meter up top – this is the key to unlocking even more benefits and making this round really pay. Sometimes he’ll pull his bazooka out and nuke the grid; this game has a strange sense of humor at times.
Pros
- A sequel to Big Bass Bonanza and part of the famous Big Bass series
- Plenty of additions compared to Bonanza, such as buy the bonus and free spin modifiers
- Good theoretical RTP at 96.71%
- Thanks to new features, the game may try to help you get a third Scatter when 2 are on the grid
- Sometimes you’ll trigger fun animations
Cons
- This slot can feel pretty brutal, like it’s just eating your coins
- Some of the features seem quite random and hard to understand at first
- Max win is improved, but still not massive by modern standards
How To Play
- Choose your bet size and start spinning.
- Base symbols start paying from as few as 2 in a payline.
- If 2 Scatter symbols land without a third, the game may randomly try to help you get a third via the below features:
- If the Scatters on-screen can move down without leaving the grid, they will, and other reels get a respin.
- Sometimes a hook will simply pull up one of the reels to reveal a Scatter for you.
- 3 Scatter symbols will take you to the free spins round, or you can buy into it.
- There’s an opportunity to land modifiers to improve your chances in the free spins (detailed below).
- Once the free spins round begins, the Fisherman Wild will make a few appearances, collecting any Fish Money values on-screen for you. Every Wild will also light up a square in the progressive meter up top.
- The further along this meter you progress, the more rewards you’ll unlock. For example, you get extra free spins, plus multipliers.
Bonus Symbols
- Scatter symbol: Landing these will take you into the free spins round. 3 will get you 10 free spins, 4 will get you 15 free spins, and 5 will get you 20 free spins.
- Fisherman Wild symbol: This guy starts making appearances once you’re in the free spins. He’ll act as a standard Wild, collect money from any Fish Money symbols on screen for you, and light up a square on the progressive meter.
- Fish Money symbols: In the base game, Fish Money symbols can form a standard payline. In the free spins round, their attached totals will be gathered up and added together by the Fisherman Wild.
Bonus Features
- Free spins round: The Fisherman Wild makes appearances here to gather up money from the Fish Money symbols.
- Free spins progressive meter: All the Wild symbols that hit during the round are recorded in the meter above the grid. Reaching certain squares will give you rewards. For example, every fourth Wild retriggers 10 more spins, and applies a multiplier to the Fish Money symbols.
- Free spins random features: Like the base game, there are some extra features which randomly help you out.
- If you have Fish Money symbols but no Fisherman Wild, a Hook may pull a Wild up onto the grid for you.
- Conversely, if there are Fisherman Wilds but no Fish Money symbols, a Bazooka can appear and everything but the Wilds gets replaced. Or Dynamite can appear and add Fish Money symbols to the grid.
- Free spins modifiers: Before the free spins begin, you’ll have the chance to grab these modifiers.
- More Fish: Higher chance of landing Fish Money symbols.
- More Fisherman: Higher chance of landing the Fisherman Wild.
- More Dynamites, Hooks and Bazookas: The chance for all these features increases.
- Start from level 2: Automatically start with 10 extra free spins and a 2x multiplier.
- +2 spins: You receive an extra 2 free spins and 2 more spins are added to every retrigger.
- Max win: This is set at 5,000x your wager, an increase from Big Bass Bonanza’s 2,100x.
SweepsPlays Verdict
- Splash is a much more fleshed-out version of Big Bass Bonanza. It has a buy the bonus feature, plus the potential to land modifiers going into the free spins round. There are also plenty of smaller events that can surprise you and nudge the grid in your favor.
- Splash has a higher max win, and is more volatile. Whether you’re pleased about that second point depends on personal preference.
- The difficulty level does feel too brutal at times, and landing modifiers in the free spins round doesn’t seem to influence the eventual outcome much.
- It’s also quite complex at first, especially for beginners. We recommend studying our review here to fully understand the mechanics and flow.
- The progressive meter is the key to getting decent rewards in the free spins. More often than not, you don’t even reach the first retrigger, but when you do, you could be in for a treat. This is where the game reflects its highly volatile rating.
