Big Bass Bonanza 3 Reeler Review

Big Bass Bonanza 3 Reeler is part of the ever-popular Big Bass series from Pragmatic Play, and this studio loves taking a successful slot and milking it. Sometimes it just applies a reskin and calls it a day, but at least with Big Bass Bonanza 3 Reeler, Pragmatic has actually changed the gameplay in some way, even if it’s slight.

Whether you’ll be a fan of the new changes or not is another matter! As the title implies, the action takes place over 3 reels now, harking back to the days of classic fruit machines. This reduces the number of possible paylines to only 5, but the stats are still about what you’d expect from this series: 96.50% RTP, 4/5 volatility, and a 5,000x max win.

The core gameplay remains the same too. You’re looking to land symbols on traditional paylines, with Scatter symbols taking you into a bonus round. There, the Fisherman makes appearances, gathering up any values from Fish Money symbols for you and lighting up squares in the progressive meter.

Pros

  • Another title in this popular series
  • Offers a classic fruit machine feel with 3 reels
  • Ante bet and buy the bonus options available
  • High RTP

Cons

  • All things considered, still not much has changed in this version
  • Many players will be tired of the Big Bass series by this point
  • Max win is relatively low
  • Dynamite, Hook, and Bazooka features available but rarely land

Gameplay

How To Play

  1. Choose your bet size and start spinning.
  2. In the base game, the aim is to land 3 of the same symbol on one of the 5 paylines.
  3. Hit 3 Scatter symbols to trigger the free spins feature. You get 10 free spins, plus 2 more for each Scatter that landed on the top row of the reels, and 1 more for each Scatter that landed on the middle row.
  4. Fisherman Wild symbols now land randomly in the free spins round and collect values from any Fish Money symbols also on screen. On top of this, the Wilds light up a square in the progressive meter above the grid, and by building this up you can retrigger more free spins and add multipliers to your Fish Money wins.
  5. In the base game, you can switch on the ante bet to increase your chances of spinning into the free spins, or simply buy the bonus.
  6. Also, in the base game, symbols can randomly appear fully covering reels 1 and 2.

Bonus Symbols

  • Scatter symbol: In the base game, landing 3 will trigger the free spins feature. Also, a hook can randomly appear, pulling 1, 2, or 3 Scatter symbols onto the grid.
  • Fish Money symbols: These land in both the base game and the free spins round. They can form paylines in both games, but their money values only come into play in the free spins, being gathered by the Fisherman. Possible values are: 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 200x, 500x, 1,666x, 2,500x, 5000x total bet.
  • Fisherman Wild symbol: This guy only shows up in the free spins. He’ll hit randomly and perform two functions. The first is collecting up any values from Fish Money symbols on the grid, and the second is lighting up a square on the progressive meter, helping to unlock more free spins and multipliers.

Bonus Features

  • Free spins round: Building on the base game, the Fisherman Wild makes random appearances here to gather Fish Money values and light up squares on the progressive meter now sitting above the grid. Every 4th Wild symbol collected retriggers 10 free spins and adds/increases the multiplier for collected Fish Money values. Possible multiplier values are 2x, 3x, and 10x. After the third retrigger, the feature cannot be retriggered again.
  • Dynamite Spin feature: Randomly, in the free spins when there are Wilds but no Fish Money symbols, this feature can add them to the grid.
  • Hook feature: Randomly, in the base game, a hook can appear, pulling 1, 2, or 3 Scatter symbols onto the grid. Randomly, in the free spins when there are Fish Money symbols but no Wilds, a hook can pull up on a random reel to reveal a Wild.
  • Bazooka feature: Randomly, in the free spins when there are Wilds but no Fish Money symbols, this feature can replace all symbols but Wilds to try and achieve a win.
  • Ante bet: Switching this on will increase your chance of spinning into the free spins. It costs an extra 50% of your wager.
  • Buy the bonus: By selecting the Buy Free Spins option you can go straight to the free spins for 100x your wager. By selecting the Buy Super Free Spins option you can go straight to the free spins, with only 3 Wilds rather than 4 now needed to retrigger via the progressive meter. Also the multiplier after the third retrigger is set to 20x rather than 10x.
  • Max win: 5,000x, with a 1 in 7,226,879 chance.
  • Hit frequency: 1 in 7.45 spins on average.
  • Free spins frequency: 1 in 114 spins on average.

SweepsPlays Verdict

  • With it being one of the more modern Big Bass titles, it benefits from small improvements compared to the earliest versions, like Big Bass Bonanza. We’re talking things like animated backgrounds and gaining more free spins depending on what row your Scatters landed on. Plus, of course, there’s a reduction in the amount of reels to give this particular slot a different, more classic feel.
  • Is it enough to warrant a new game? That’s up to you and depends on whether you enjoy this series in the first place.
  • Fundamentally, the gameplay remains the same, and on the whole – like the other Big Bass slots – it can be stingy at times.
