Strengthening the theory that all slots developers meet up and decide to release games with similar mechanics at the same time, this week we have plenty with building global multipliers. We also have lots of sequels, and two titles with a strong Japanese influence! Do read on as I go into each new game in detail.

Bad Santa from Peter & Sons is one of those progressive global multiplier games, and in terms of theme it feels inspired by the Krampus parades. That means there’s a Christmas atmosphere but it’s definitely the darker side of the celebration with hideous looking creatures on the prowl. Suitingly, the music is festive but eery, although there’s not really a strong storyline…
The gameplay is straightforward and fun though. It’s a 6 x 5 cascading scatter pays slot, and whenever you land 8 or more of the same symbol, the cascade takes place while the multiplier to the left of the grid ratchets up a notch (but it resets with every new spin). If you land the bonus feature, the multipliers keep building for the whole round, and wins can balloon fast with a max win of 20,000x available.
Ultra Fruit Smash also has a building global multiplier. It’s a sequel to Slotmill‘s Fruit Smash and Super Fruit Smash games, both scatter pays titles where the multiplier is bumped up with every tumbling win. However, now the multiplier is pumped up through a combination of Giant Symbols, Golden Multiplier Bananas, and Multiplier Chests, and, like Bad Santa, it can get big fast. This game might look a little basic on the surface, but it’s a huge amount of fun with great mathematical nuance and complexity. Plus it has the usual visual flair that Slotmill is known for. If it hadn’t been for Toshi Ways Club coming out this week, Ultra Fruit Smash would have been Game of the Week.

Cash Wash Deluxe by Popiplay is a sequel to the original Cash Wash slot from earlier this year. Not much has changed aside from a few graphics and the stats – the max win has been boosted up to 10,100x and the RTP to 97.11%. Other than that it’s still the same slot – one which reminds us of The Dog House. So that’s a 5 x 3 grid with Multiplier Wilds that land randomly. Then in the bonus round, the Multiplier Wilds become sticky for respins.
Cyber Runner is one for fans of the cyberpunk aesthetic. If you don’t know what that is, think Blade Runner. And if you don’t know what that is, watch the movie! But Cyber Runner – this does look great and rather unique, as do all Peter & Sons titles. Here things play out on a 6 x 4 grid with an all ways pays mechanic. This is another of the games I referenced up top because there’s a building multiplier involved, but unlike Bad Santa where the multiplier doubles, this game just adds 1 with each respin, so things take a little longer to heat up. Expanding Wilds help create wins though, and the Infection concept transforms low-paying symbols into high-paying ones for you.
Bullride Loot is the latest slot from Bullshark, and if you didn’t know, this studio creates games within the framework of Hacksaw’s OpenRGS system, which is why a lot of their titles might feel similar. I’m not going to lie, the base game here is dry. There are 20 paylines with Wilds and Multipliers, but nothing to truly get the blood pumping.
The bonus round is more exciting – a meter at the bottom of the screen list all potential multiplier values, and each time a Scatter lands, the lowest possible value is knocked off, gradually pushing things higher as the round goes on. There’s a 20,000x max win too, but I wonder how much Bullshark are limited by their collaboration arrangement with Hacksaw? I’d like to see something more unique from this studio next time.

Donny and Danny from Hacksaw is a sequel to two previous games: Donny Dough and Danny Dollar. Here are two brothers who each had their own slot, and now they’ve come together, combining their features into one razzling dazzling title. Of course, the flashy vintage cartoon look has been retained too, something that Hacksaw does excellently well.
So, to get technical for a minute, Donny Dough actually kickstarted Hacksaw’s Lootlines concept. This is where symbols with additive and multiplicative multipliers create winning lines, combining their values in a mathematical equation applied to the wager. Then Danny Dollar brought us Dollar-Reels, expanding Wilds that grow upwards.
Therefore, in Donny and Danny, both main features are combined, which makes a lot of sense in theory. What I found was that neither of these two ideas showed up as often as in the original games (at least in the plain base game), so once again it feels like a slot where Hacksaw is pushing us towards the ante-bets and bonus buys. Some people don’t mind that, others do. I do have to say, this game looks amazing, so it’s worth trying just for the visuals.
Now we finish off with those two Japanese titles I mentioned at the start.

The first is MonkeyPop 2, a sequel to one of my all-time favorite slots, MonkeyPop. These are both part of the PopWins slot family, where winning reels expand by 1 square for the duration of the spin, a tried and true formula from developer AvatarUX. Of course, I went into this sequel with some excitement, but was ultimately disappointed. Sad monkey face.
For a start the max win has been halved to 10,000x, the RTP has dropped a touch to 96.00%, and the gameplay doesn’t offer anything fundamentally different. The visuals still look beautiful, but when the main new feature is the chance to gamble on the attributes going into the bonus round – which can result in the whole round getting cancelled – this feels like an odd sequel I’m really not interested in playing. What a letdown.
Fortunately, we get to end things on a high note today, so for the second Japanese-themed title, head to the Game of the Week section below.

Game of the Week
Our Game of the Week is another sequel from Hacksaw, and it’s a doozy. Slot connoisseurs may remember Toshi Video Club from 2021 with its old school manga aesthetic and building global multiplier. Well Toshi Ways Club takes the look and feel from that game while adding in a Megaways feel to the grid and rehashing the gameplay fairly substantially.

In fact, this is not tumbling Megaways as we know it; rather, only the winnings symbols get a respin thanks to Flash Frames, creating a unique and refreshing flow. When the Flash Frames are respun, that can bring other frames into the winning lines as well, and wins can expand across the grid in this way.
We also have Swap symbols, which, when present with a win, pick one symbol at random and apply it to all Flash Frames, creating one more big win at the end of every set of respins.
As for bonus rounds, in the Retro Reboot free spins you essentially get a higher chance of landing Swap symbols, and in Suckr Punch, Slicing Swap symbols activate. These act like Swap symbols, but they also slice Flash Frames into the smallest possible symbol size, creating many, many wins on the grid. Maybe I can compare this to a combination of Nolimit City’s xWays and xSplit ideas, but Hacksaw makes it feel original here.

In Toshi Ways Club, the understated white, black, and orange color scheme looks lovely and crisp, and the animations and sound design are on point. I have to mention the CRT off and on switch too, which doesn’t affect gameplay but adds lines of static to the screen for a true retro feel.
A great deal of attention has gone into this game, and it uses both antique and modern elements of Japanese culture, packaged up in an amazing title for the modern age of slots – well done Hacksaw.
