This week there’s a decidedly old world feel to proceedings with 3 separate trips to classical Rome/Greece.
However, first I need to mention the massive dump of new games from TaDa. I’m not going to review each one in detail because they can be quite derivative, but the best of this bunch might be Gold Mine Express with its gold prospecting feel. Then there’s also Cash Balloon if you want a crash type game with a different dynamic (you control the movement).
Back to slots, Arena of Fortune by Relax Gaming could appeal to fans of the gladiator or Roman aesthetic – the latter pops up more often than you might expect in slots. However, the gameplay here could well have earned a thumbs down from Caesar because it’s competent but doesn’t truly excite.
You play across 40 paylines on the 5 x 4 grid, and you’ll mainly be looking for Wilds, which come in two flavors. First, there’s the Centurion Wild that can cover all of reels 2, 3, or 4 when it lands – if it does, it triggers a respin with Wild in place. Second, there’s the Horizontal Wild, which shoots an arrow from left to right, creating a line of horizontal Wilds on the grid. The bonus round doesn’t vary much from the base game, except for the fact that any Centurion Wilds become sticky, but if you don’t land one in the first place, that’s not much help.
Hacksaw really likes to put ‘Death’ in its game titles lately: Deal With Death, Life and Death, and now Dynasty of Death. Maybe the studio is going through its goth phase? Drilling down into the theme here some more, the storyline revolves around Hades and Persephone specifically, and a game of chess so that Persephone can win her freedom. But in terms of gameplay, there’s not too much new here – the main feature is DualReels, found in previous Hacksaw games like Wanted Dead or a Wild and Duel at Dawn.
No cowboys here though – we’re firmly in the blues and grays of the underworld, and you can probably guess who the two characters on the DualReels are. Wins can be scored across 14 paylines, boosted by the winning multiplier from the DualReel, where applicable; the free spins just give a better chance of landing a DualReel. It’s not Hacksaw’s best work and it rehashes ideas from the past, but it’s still a better than average slot.
Next, Gates of Power comes from Perfect Position, a newer studio that works with BGaming, so if you see this title listed under BGaming’s distribution, you know why. And if you like Gates of Olympus from Pragmatic Play – let’s be honest, who doesn’t – there’s a strong chance you’ll like Gates of Power.
This high volatility, scatter pays slot takes a huge dollop of inspiration from the Prag classic from 2021. In fact, I’d go so far as saying it’s essentially the same game with a different way to score multipliers. Instead of multis simply landing on the board, there’s now a row of 5 atop the play area, and a Bolt symbol can land on the grid at random to trigger one of these.
To be honest, you get the same result in the end: random multipliers can boost your scatter wins. The bonus game maintains the idea of a building total multiplier, again fuelled by the multis triggered by Bolts. And it’s pleasing to see the total multiplier can really get up there in terms of value, especially as the bonus round comes with 15 free spins.
The art gives this an epic comic-book look, but with how closely the gameplay mirrors Gates of Olympus, it’s lucky the law allows slots to copy each other, otherwise Perfect Position would be facing some legal headaches! As for the stats, RTP clocks in at 96.03% here, plus there’s a max win of 15,000x – nice!

Game of the Week
OK, Gobstopper Grind doesn’t have any kind of ancient theme. Far from it – the gumball machine mascot is very ‘Bullshark Games‘ with an almost Pixar look.
Then the gameplay sees the studio return to an idea it used only last week in Junkyard Kings 2. I call this the Sugar Rush mechanic, where highlighted squares hold multipliers that grow every time a win is scored on said square via tumbling. Of course, in the free spins, the multipliers build across the whole round rather than resetting with each spin.
However, rather than the cluster pays format that you usually see paired with this concept, Gobstopper Grind works via scatter pays (8 or more symbols), so the highlighted squares get spread across the grid, making things feel a bit more unpredictable. It’s a bit of a different flow, and it leads to less concentrated areas like in Sugar Rush with its cluster pays mechanic.
There is the Collector Symbol here though, and this can join with any other symbol to pull in the multipliers from the surrounding squares. Add the two tweaks together and it’s enough for this to feel like a fresh take on an old formula, and for that reason, Gobstopper Grind is Game of the Week.
